A Campus Archaeological Site Becomes an Immersive Arena Where a Century of History Tempers the “Ironman Spirit”
The final-round challenge, “A Fantasy Journey to Kavalan,” transformed NIU’s campus archaeological site into an immersive competition arena. NIU President Wei-Rong Chen highlighted the distinctive character of the university’s Shennong Campus. While researching the university’s history, NIU discovered that the Kavalan people had lived on this land more than 400 years ago. This discovery made NIU the only university in Taiwan with a registered archaeological site—the Yilan Agricultural School Archaeological Site—located on its campus.
President Chen explained that the challenge incorporated valuable cultural elements from across the university, including excavated artifacts displayed in Wanbin Hall, representations of early Kavalan life along the Kavalan Cultural Corridor, and a century of changes to the campus landscape presented in the NIU History Gallery. By visiting these locations in person during the challenge, contestants could gain a deeper appreciation of the land’s history. This spirit of inquiry forms the foundation of NIU’s efforts to cultivate students’ civic competence, professional expertise, and well-being.
Teams Leave the Classroom to Solve Mysteries Across an Archaeological Campus
Unlike previous challenges, which were generally confined to a single classroom, this year’s finals introduced “A Fantasy Journey to Kavalan,” an immersive challenge deeply connected to local history. The challenge designers transformed history and culture into puzzle clues and, for the first time, expanded the competition area across the entire campus. Contestants were encouraged to explore NIU’s century-old heritage as they moved between locations.
Teams had to leave the classroom and visit Wanbin Hall, which displays prehistoric artifacts; the Kavalan Cultural Corridor, which recreates aspects of Indigenous craftsmanship; and the NIU History Gallery, which preserves the university’s history. Through the puzzle-solving process, they pieced together the historical memories unique to this land.
A permanent exhibition titled “Cultural Layer of the Yilan Agricultural School Archaeological Site” stands in front of Wanbin Hall. It consists of three areas: the Foyer Wall Display, Replica Artifact Exhibition, and Multimedia Interactive Area. Combining realistic reproductions with audiovisual and written materials, the exhibition recreates an archaeological excavation site and scenes from the lives of the early Kavalan people.
The Kavalan Cultural Corridor reconstructs aspects of traditional Kavalan life as well as native plants and wildlife. Its interactive displays and information panels allow faculty members and students to engage with local culture while walking through the campus. The NIU History Gallery, meanwhile, functions as a modern university museum. It preserves records of a century of changes to the campus landscape and artifacts from NIU’s history while incorporating projection mapping, three-dimensional models, and augmented reality to create a multisensory experience.
Excavating Artifacts and Comparing Maps Put Remote Teamwork to the Test
“The challenge deliberately created physical distance between team members, with the entire National Ilan University campus serving as the main competition arena,” challenge designers Wei-Chu and Yu-Tai explained.
They noted that NIU is the only university in Taiwan with a registered archaeological site on its campus. The archaeological artifacts in Wanbin Hall, the plants and installations along the Kavalan Cultural Corridor, and the NIU History Gallery inside the library all served as inspiration for the challenge.
To manage the time spent exploring outdoors, each team was divided into the “Archaeology Doctors” and the “Archaeology Team.” The Archaeology Doctors carefully excavated bones and artifacts, interpreted historical and current maps, and helped the Archaeology Team manage its time. Guided through two-way radios, the Archaeology Team moved between historical locations across the campus, searching for former sites and taking photographs.
During the 40-minute remote collaboration, contestants were tested not only on their concentration and short-term memory while collecting artifacts, but also on their ability to communicate and work together across separate locations.
During the excavation, the Archaeology Doctors uncovered a woven-metal ornament known as the “Golden Carp,” a precious decorative object unique to Taiwan’s Kavalan people. Made by winding fine metal wire into a crescent shape and covering its surface with gold leaf, the ornament demonstrates the sophisticated craftsmanship of the early Kavalan people.
Similar rare Golden Carp artifacts have been unearthed several times during construction work on the NIU campus, providing important historical evidence of early Kavalan life and culture. The challenge placed considerable demands on the contestants’ eyesight and memory. Members of the Archaeology Team had to remember every small detail in the display cases and connect the clues accurately to decipher the answers and complete the challenge.

Remote Communication Becomes the Key as Teams Adjust Their Strategies on the Move
The immersive challenge tested more than observational skills. It also required teams to continually adjust how they worked together. Ayaka Wake of Japan’s "WASEDA" team said the greatest difficulty was communicating between teammates indoors and those exploring outside. Members stationed at the Archaeology Headquarters had to relay information clearly to their teammates in the field. Although the communication did not always go smoothly, she still found the experience highly enjoyable.
Her teammate Masamune Ozawa said contestants had to search for clues hidden throughout the campus, some of which were even concealed beneath the floor. Finding them was difficult, but being able to move around and explore the campus made the experience memorable.
Chiu Jo-yu of "PR99 Goblins" said the team did not have a complete strategy at first. After realizing that listening to the full question descriptions helped them identify answers more quickly, the team gradually developed a more systematic approach following its first mission at Wanbin Hall.
Members of the "Cycas 2.0" team said the immersive puzzle challenge gave them a deeper understanding of Kavalan history and culture. Although the Archaeology Team had limited time to search for clues outdoors, the experience brought them closer to the rich cultural heritage of the land on which NIU stands.
From communicating across separate locations to adjusting strategies under pressure, each team developed its own rhythm of cooperation. The challenge transformed campus history into something contestants could physically enter, explore, and solve together.
