Mind Control Alchemy Turns Boredom Around as Diverse Creativity Takes Center Stage
This year’s contest drew more than 400 teams and over 2,000 senior-high and vocational-school students from across Taiwan. In the end, 33 top domestic and international teams advanced to the finals for the ultimate showdown. During the 72-hour final, teams had to clear a series of checkpoints while completing the main project.
The main project is designed to train students to turn creativity into practice. Starting from scratch, teams must create everything themselves—from design and story scripts to music and props. The hands-on process trains them to refine ideas into workable creativity and execution skills.
This year’s final main project, titled “Mind Control Alchemy,” tackled the “hell of boredom” most dreaded by high school students. Teams had to draw inspiration from tedious routines such as memorizing vocabulary and reading classical Chinese, then combine the element of chance in mystery boxes with dopamine-driven mechanics to build a physical prototype that could make students “addicted” to boredom. Each team not only had to apply psychological principles precisely and design positive feedback capable of instantly boosting attention and immersion, but also include a negative effect that would “make boredom even more boring.” In a five-minute product launch, a charismatic CEO led each team through an immersive set and enthusiastic audience interaction, dramatizing the ultimate mystery-box draw. From positive feedback that sharpened focus to meltdown-inducing negative effects that made boredom even worse, the striking contrast electrified the room and showcased astonishing ideas for transforming tedious routines.

Big Leap to Score Peak Straight to the National General Division Championship
The National General Division title went to Fudan High School’s “Big Leap to Score Peak”. In addition to excelling in the main project, the team earned the highest checkpoint score in “Upper Plan Astronomy, Lower Plant Geography,” winning the checkpoint award sponsored by the Lin Teng Cultural and Educational Foundation.
When asked about the inspiration behind their project, the team said it came from a deeper reflection on mystery boxes. Although mystery boxes can bring surprises, life’s best possibilities should be created with one’s own hands rather than passively received from options chosen by someone else, because the endless variations of real life are vastly richer than the fixed choices inside a box. Team member Zhang Linghuan said the greatest challenge at the beginning was turning the abstract and elusive feeling of “boredom” into a concrete, joyful device, leaving the team stuck for a long time on how to define the concept. They eventually decided to break boldly from the usual framework and imagine contrasting “good” and “bad” worlds. In the good world, users meet admirable people and absorb their strengths; in the bad world, they may face challenges and attacks. Through the mystery-box device, the team hopes to give lonely people more courage and confidence to reach out to others. To address the loneliness and boredom that arise when high school students study vocabulary alone, the team built an ingenious mechanism: users must first memorize an English word before they can unlock the box. The reward encourages students who are studying alone to explore unexpected, engaging activities and break the cycle of boredom and isolation.

火在洞裡 所向披靡 Fire in the Hole: An Unstoppable Force
Composed of students from Da-An Vocational High School and Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, “Fire in the Hole” swept both the National Vocational Division championship and second place in the International Division. The team’s main-project installation was visually striking and true to its name: an exquisitely crafted “Reforging Furnace” that stunned the audience.
The team keenly observed that students often become trapped in the boredom and frustration of rote memorization. Whenever students tire of memorizing vocabulary or reading classical Chinese, they can toss the vocabulary book or classical text directly into the Reforging Furnace. The furnace then dispenses an “MP3 player” that repeats simple words and uses playful mnemonic associations, turning tedious memorization into an engaging game and significantly boosting retention and motivation. The team also designed a mechanism to address another dull part of campus life: cleaning. They said the most time-consuming and difficult part of the installation was the “falling leaves mechanism.” To make leaves drift down from above at exactly the right moment, the team invested enormous effort in drilling holes, calculating positions, and repeatedly testing and debugging the release timing. Achieving reliable mechanical operation became their toughest engineering breakthrough. Even more impressively, the team extended its creativity to an emotional dimension. During the presentation, a “ring” symbolized boredom and loneliness, and a judge was invited to drop it into the furnace. When a user feels alone, the furnace unexpectedly produces a warm, hand-drawn letter covered in hearts, offering companionship and easing loneliness. At the product launch, the team used hands-on interaction and humorous dialogue to show the judges how the furnace could transform negative experiences into irresistible engagement.
When asked about the moment they won, team members admitted that they had never expected to receive both the National Vocational Division title and second place in the International Division. The instant they heard their team name announced, they were overwhelmed with surprise and disbelief. The team also demonstrated remarkable speed and intellect in the “Relativiskick” checkpoint, earning the highest score and the Lin Teng Innovation Award. Members laughed as they recalled how exciting and enjoyable the final checkpoints had been, and how satisfying it was to deliver a polished live performance together. But after 72 consecutive hours of extreme challenges, they were completely exhausted. “Right now, all we want is to go home and get a good night’s sleep!”
Traveling from Japan, “WASEDA” captured the International Division championship with outstanding creativity. The team drew inspiration for its main project from the members’ own experience of finding vocabulary memorization extremely dull. They combined this with Japan’s iconic “gacha” capsule-toy or mystery-box concept to create a playful, innovative learning tool designed to make vocabulary practice easier and more enjoyable. By turning the excitement of not knowing what would come out into an incentive to learn, they envisioned placing the device on campus as something students could look forward to each day—and as a way for friends to gather, solve problems together, and motivate one another.
Yet throughout the intense 72-hour challenge, the team faced enormous psychological pressure and difficult coordination. Members admitted that fierce disagreements over the core concept and design details sometimes lasted half a day or even an entire day. The greatest technical challenge was controlling exactly where the balls landed after rolling through the device. With two separate openings inside, the team had to repeatedly adjust the number of rotations and the rolling path to ensure each ball reached the intended exit. Through resilient teamwork, they ultimately overcame every obstacle and turned their idea into a championship-winning creation.
